She managed to finish the meal without harming Noff in any way. With full bellies, they freshened up in the bathroom, and Maine made preparations to connect to the tracking spell mentally and locate the assassin.

“Ya sure ya need all these pillows?” Noff yipped as he dragged another pillow off the bed and placed it on the floor in front of the hotel room wall.

She nodded. “Sage’s instructions were to find a comfortable space and meditate on the tracking spell. Then it’s supposed to manifest itself so I can see where that assassin is holed up at the moment.”

“Cool.” Noff dragged another pillow down to her and waited supportively at her side.

After inspecting the pillows Noff had laid out for her, Maine sat on them, facing the blank wall. The TV was off. All was relatively silent, except for some young children running back and forth down the hall outside the room and a man and a woman arguing in a room next to theirs. Someone had their TV turned up way too loud on the floor above them…

It was as quiet as she could reasonably expect in a hotel.

“Now I’m going to concentrate,” Maine told Noff and closed her eyes.

For a few moments, it was completely silent in the room.

“See anythin’ yet?” Noff yipped.

“No.”

Maine drew a series of calming breaths. Another couple of minutes passed.

“How ’bout now?”

“No. Can you please be quiet? I’m trying to focus my magic on tapping into the tracking spell.”

She breathed some more. Shook out her shoulders. Popped her knuckles. This time at least ten minutes passed but she felt no connection to the tracking spell. She’d followed the spell’s instructions Sage had written on her palm. She knew she had. She waited some more.

“Ohmmm…” Noff yipped.

Maine cracked an eyelid at him in warning.

“What? That’s what yogis say when they meditate. Ohmmm.”

“Now you’re a yoga expert?”

“Nah. I am the Noff. And I bring the key to damage, destruction, terror. And mayhem!”

Gritting her teeth, Maine tried to find her quiet place. “Ohmmm,” she chanted, drowning out Noff’s ranting. “Ohmmm. Ohmmm. Ohmmm…”

Her eyes shot wide open, and suddenly she wasn’t looking at the wall across from her. Instead, she viewed a mystical grid-lined orb in front of her. By concentrating, she was able to increase the orb’s size. Soon it was as big as the room and the gridlines, she realized, were latitude and longitude. She was viewing some kind of astral projection of the Earth.

“Noff, I did it—this is so cool!”

“Told ya it was the ohmmm.”

She tuned Noff out, focusing instead on the mental projection of the Earth. It was breathtakingly beautiful to behold. While looking at it, she felt so tiny. She felt awed…

Weakness: pollution. Super-volcano eruption. Asteroid strike. Acid rain…

“You can shut up, too, Mantle.”

The Mantle hissed. I am only performing the job the demigods created me for.

“Okay,” she murmured. “Now what am I supposed to do?” The instructions didn’t cover this part. They only said to mentally connect to the tracking spell while in a relaxed state.
